VJ: Spotlight on Filter Effects
Arkaos VJ’s Filter Effects alter the appearance of an image by modulating
neighboring image pixels. Depending upon user settings, Filter Effects can enhance
image quality or modify global appearance. There are a variety of Filter Effects—each
with a different array of settings—that can create an unlimited number
of cool results. Filtering is even featured in other Effects such as the Larsen
Effect and the Diffusion Effect. Here’s what the common set of controls
shared by the Filter Effects do:
• Filter Type: From the drop-down menu, you can select one of five different
Filter Types or None. The None option does not mean that there will be no Effect,
just that no specific Filter Type is applied. You can still use the Gain, Mix
and Clip result parameters.
• Gain: Gain lets you control the amount of Effect applied to the visual.
The higher the gain value, the more the Effect is applied. High values (over
100) cause the original colors of the image to be heavily oversaturated, “burning” the
image.
• Mix: Mix controls the balance between the original image and the Effect.
High values cause the Effect to be more predominant.
• Clip Result: With this option activated, the output of the Effect will
be attenuated—useful if you want to prevent wild color cycling when “burning” a
visual with the Gain parameter.
• Kernel: This section is used when you select Kernel as the Filter Type.
You can then either choose from seven different presets or create a custom Kernel
setup by entering values from -1024 to 1024 in the nine Kernel boxes. This kind
of filtering lets you change the gain of a center pixel and its eight surrounding
pixels, which will make an image sharper, blurred, saturated, etc. To learn more
about Kernel filtering in general, check out a good technical bookstore or the
Web.
• Box: This is one of the most popular Filter Type settings. Without altering
the settings, Box appears to smooth the image. Increasing the gain parameter,
however, will saturate colors and even increase luminosity if clipped. It’s
also the fastest Filter service, allowing visuals and other effects to run at
their top-speed. Like all Filter Effects, Box is optimized for several powerful
architectures, including the latest Intel Pentium 4 and Motorola G4 processors.
