Drummers Terry Bozzio and Pat Mastelotto Collaborate
to Create Surround Sound DVD
January
18, 2003 was a night of exploration and adventure as world-renowned
drummers Terry Bozzio (Frank Zappa) and Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson)
took the stage at the One World Theater in Austin, Texas. Bozzio
and Mastelotto spent the evening demonstrating their incredible
improvisational chops while instrumental tracks created in Ableton’s
Live provided a background for the performance. The sold-out show
was filmed and recorded for an upcoming DVD, which will be mixed
in surround sound.
King Crimson engineer Bill Munyon provided the house sound and recorded
the performance, which incorporated live flute, violin, gongs and
a variety of different types of drums. Subsequent to the live performance,
Bozzio and Mastelotto embarked on a five-day camera shoot to provide
additional footage for the DVD. Engineer/producer Chet Himes will
sort through the tracks to create the surround mix.
